April The Giraffe Finally Gave Birth Over The Weekend

Arin Spits / April 18, 2017

Some may have thought it wouldn’t happen because the Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York, started livestreaming the event in February. Many from around the world have tuned in on a daily basis to witness the event, but April delivered the male calf just before 10 am EDT on Saturday morning.

More than a million viewers tuned in to watch the birth happen in real-time.

It was certainly a unnerving to watch because giraffes give birth standing up. That means the baby has to drop about 6 feet right off the bat. Luckily, the calf was unharmed and currently nursing strongly while the mother is also recovering ‘perfectly.’

This is Animal Adventure Park’s first giraffe calf, but also April’s fourth. The father is named Oliver, a 5-year-old giraffe who was watching from an adjacent pen.

The calf has yet to be named, but there is a contest going on now to rectify that. There’s also a GoFundMe page that was set up to collect donations to help out with a ‘family fund’ for the giraffes.

The baby giraffe was measured at 58.5 kg or 129 lbs and already stands at 1.75 meters or 5 feet 9 inches tall. It took about 45 minutes after birth before he was able to stand up. He was visibly woobly, but the mother did her part to keep him steady.

Glad to see mother and son doing well!
